West Ham United’s Premier League campaign got off to a torrid start as they were thrashed 5-0 by Manchester City at the London Stadium. After a competitive first half, the reigning champions ran rampant after the break.
The Hammers could not deal with the visitors’ quick passing and movement. They were overrun in the middle of the park as the Irons’ midfield unit lost control of the game and failed to provide any ammunition for the attackers ahead of them.
Manuel Pellegrini will be disappointed that his side couldn’t put up more of a fight against his former club. However, he will be relieved to have this tough challenge out of the way.

There was plenty of analysis of the hosts’ performance after the match. One player who proved a particular talking point was Jack Wilshere. The former Arsenal man was named in the starting XI but was substituted off in the second half.
The 27-year-old midfielder has been plagued with injury issues in recent seasons. He will be desperate to remain fit and healthy throughout the campaign this time around. However, the clash against Manchester City proved a tough test. His performance was certainly something of a mixed bag, and he really struggled to cope as the opposition improved as the game went on.
After the match, plenty of West Ham fans took to Twitter to discuss the 34-cap England international’s display.
