West Ham United’s Premier League campaign got off to a torrid start as they were thrashed 5-0 by Manchester City at the London Stadium. After a competitive first half, the reigning champions ran rampant after the break.
The Hammers could not deal with the visitors’ quick passing and movement. They were overrun in the middle of the park as the Irons’ midfield unit lost control of the game and failed to provide any ammunition for the attackers ahead of them.
Manuel Pellegrini will be disappointed that his side couldn’t put up more of a fight against his former club. However, he will be relieved to have this tough challenge out of the way.
There was plenty of analysis of the hosts’ performance after the match. One player who proved a particular talking point was Jack Wilshere. The former Arsenal man was named in the starting XI but was substituted off in the second half.
The 27-year-old midfielder has been plagued with injury issues in recent seasons. He will be desperate to remain fit and healthy throughout the campaign this time around. However, the clash against Manchester City proved a tough test. His performance was certainly something of a mixed bag, and he really struggled to cope as the opposition improved as the game went on.
After the match, plenty of West Ham fans took to Twitter to discuss the 34-cap England international’s display.
Lanzini was appalling today, poor performances from Wilshere and Antonio too

Lots of positives from today’s game based on first half. Think 5 nil flattered them but they are back to back champions. Haller looks a great buy and Wilshere looked very good. We need to look at shutting up shop on occasions against the bigger sides. #WHUFC #COYI

Diop, wilshere & lanzini gave very lazy performances

Haller showed some decent touches and hold up play. Didn’t really have much service due to midfield two being overrun and the three behind him getting no service themselves. Rice tried his best but was left exposed by Wilshere being so slow and no third man in midfield.

Say what you like but we missed Noble today. Wilshere was invisible
