Newcastle United’s expected recruitment drive after their Saudi-backed takeover is complete could have a rather British feel to it, according to reports.
90Min is reporting that a whole host of UK-based players could form the first wave of new recruits at St James’ Park, including Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn.
It is not the first time he has been linked with Newcastle. The Daily Star claimed last month that Steve Bruce would be keen on a reunion with the player on Tyneside, although Bruce’s future appears to be elsewhere post-takeover.

But one man who would undoubtedly welcome a move for McGinn is Newcastle United legend, Alan Shearer. The club’s record goal-scorer spoke about McGinn to the Premier League website in October after a starring performance against Burnley and made it very clear he is a huge fan of the Scotland international.
“Great energy in midfield, a superb eye for a pass and got his third goal of the season, while another was overturned by VAR. He has become invaluable to his team’s prospects of staying up.”
Of course, signing McGinn will not be easy, even if Aston Villa are relegated this season.
The midfielder is valued highly at Villa Park. In fact, last summer, The Sun was suggesting that Aston Villa value the 25-year-old at £50 million amid interest from Manchester United.
Such a fee seems unlikely in the current climate. Indeed, last month, the Star suggested a £30 million fee was far more likely.
Considering how impressive McGinn had been in the Premier League, prior to his injury, there is no doubt Shearer and Newcastle United fans would be pleased if McGinn was brought in.
