Inter Milan plot Celtic raid for £20m Odsonne Edouard transfer
According to Calciomercato, Inter Milan are lining up a raid on Celtic to sign Leicester City target Odsonne Edouard.
The Serie A champions are monitoring Edouard’s situation as they prepare to tear apart a title-winning squad. Inter have to balance the books to the tune of €100million (£86m) in the summer transfer window, with several key players to be sold.
Among those facing uncertain futures include Alexis Sanchez and Lautaro Martinez, which would leave a gap at striker. Edouard is seen as the perfect solution as the Frenchman’s physical strength and speed would see him complement Inter’s attackers.
Edouard entering the final year of his Celtic contract also sees the 23-year-old considered an opportunity for the Nerazzurri. But they would have to face competition from Leicester, while rivals AC Milan are keen, as well.
Leicester are on pole to sign Edouard in the summer window having followed the striker for several months. The Foxes are preparing a bid, too, while Milan are yet to open negotiations with the Hoops. However, the Rossoneri have closely tracked developments.
Arsenal, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Napoli are also long-term admirers. But the Daily Record report Celtic will demand no less than £20million to part with their record signing. That’s because the Hoops would owe Paris Saint-Germain half of any profit on his £9m move to Glasgow.
TBR’s view: Leicester favourites for Celtic striker Edouard
Celtic will be in a strong position to hold out for their full asking price with interest in Edouard widespread and growing. But they must resolve the forward’s future this summer, as they cannot risk him leaving for free next year.
Leicester are still the most likely suitor given Brendan Rodgers’ long-standing interest. But Inter could emerge as a worthwhile avenue to explore if they manage to part with Sanchez or Martinez. Their position may not emerge until later in the window, though.
Interest from Sevilla in Sanchez (Sport) could see the Chilean Jurgen Klopp once described as ‘world-class’ depart the San Siro. Yet Martinez is likely to stay, with the Argentine desperate to sign a new contract (FC Inter News). And that could rule out Edouard moving to Italy.
Celtic, then, must hope Leicester step forward with a £20m bid, to at least make £5m profit on the forward. That is, unless the Hoops can convince their 22-goal striker to pen a new deal.
