Crystal Palace have had a slow summer, but they kicked into gear last week with the signings of Max Meyer and Cheikhou Kouyate. The former was an eye-catching addition and underlined the pulling power of the Eagles under Roy Hodgson.
Those additions have addressed some problems in the squad, but there is more that needs to be done before the transfer deadline. Hodgson will want to have a squad capable of finishing in the top-half of the table and one or two more options will help with that.
In addition to bringing players in, Crystal Palace will want to keep their current squad together. It was seen as imperative to keep Wilfried Zaha and the forward remains at Selhurst Park at the time of writing. However, there have been recent reports linking him with a move away and that will increase worries among the supporters.
Here are four ins and outs Palace could complete during the transfer window’s final week…
Jordan Ayew – Swansea City
A deal for Jordan Ayew was thought to be close last week, but it hasn’t been a straightforward transfer for Crystal Palace to complete. The Guardian reported that they were poised to complete a deal for the striker on Wednesday.
However, Ghana Soccernet report that Burnley are looking to hijack the deal as their summer recruitment has sprung into action. Ayew was one of the better players for Swansea last season with seven goals and two assists. It isn’t a surprise that there is a lot of interest from Premier League clubs.
Palace will be looking to add competition to their forward line and Ayew would be a great option. He is dynamic and capable of producing a moment of magic to change a game. Moreover, he is capable of playing as a striker or on either wing. There is still work to do, but the Eagles are one of the frontrunners.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek – Chelsea
This is a deal that Crystal Palace fans will be desperate to complete as Loftus-Cheek made a huge impact last season at Selhurst Park. His loan spell resulted in a World Cup call-up and his reputation has soared as a result.
The Times report that the midfielder will pursue a loan move abroad if he isn’t given much playing time at the start of the season. They go on to write that he is unlikely to force the issue before the end of the domestic transfer window.
However, he wasn’t included in the squad for the Community Shield and that will have alerted a lot of Premier League clubs. Crystal Palace will have taken note and they might try one last attempt to bring him back to Selhurst Park. This is one to keep an eye on as the deadline draws closer.
Wilfried Zaha – Chelsea
There has been plenty of speculation regarding Zaha’s future over the last few seasons, but they have resulted in little. The Mirror report that he has told team-mates that he wants to leave the club and join Chelsea.
A lot of Crystal Palace supporters have doubted the credibility of these claims as Zaha does appear happy at the club, but there will be nerves heading into the final few days of the transfer window. The Mirror later reported that Tottenham have been put off by the £75 million valuation, but Chelsea remain in the running.
It would be a surprise if Zaha left this late in the transfer window and it would take an eye-watering amount of money to tempt Crystal Palace into a sale. It is unlikely, but it would be foolish to rule it out.
