Tottenham Hotspur suffered a 4-1 defeat to Chelsea at home last night, but ESPN pundit Mario Melchiot was still impressed with Guglielmo Vicario.

Spurs were in complete control of the game at the start, but a mad challenge by Cristian Romero followed by another by Destiny Udogie saw Tottenham go down to nine men. Chelsea picked up a good win in the end despite Vicario’s best efforts to keep them at bay.

Guglielmo Vicario impresses for Tottenham despite 4-1 defeat to Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur signed Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli in the summer transfer window.

Not many people here in England knew much about him, which raised concerns over whether he’s good enough to be the number one at Spurs.

However, Vicario has been sensational for Tottenham this season. He’s yet to put a foot wrong, has pulled off some outrageous saves and has saved Spurs on numerous occasions already.

Even last night, when both of Spurs’ first-choice centre-backs were off the field, Vicario seemed unfazed. He was outstanding in his sweeper-keeper role and pulled off a few very impressive saves as well.

All the talk about Tottenham right now is regarding Cristian Romero’s madness, but the biggest positive has to be Vicario’s performance in such a difficult game.

Speaking about the Italian, Melchiot said on ESPN: “Vicario, the goalkeeper of Spurs, was incredibly good. We can talk how Chelsea couldn’t break that line, yes, I agree with that, but how he was playing, oh my God!

“If I have a goalkeeper like him behind me, then every time he was reading the pass that Chelsea was trying to break that line, he was there. Almost like a central defender.

“It was incredible to watch, because he stopped maybe four or five or six, I don’t know the number.”

Vicario has been outstanding for Tottenham

Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario came in as an unknown quantity to many in the summer, but he is the talk of the town now.

The Italian is so calm under pressure. He’s excellent with the ball at his feet, and his performances so far this season are one of the biggest reasons why Spurs were unbeaten until yesterday.

If Hugo Lloris had played instead of Vicario last night, Chelsea would’ve probably scored three of four more goals when they got in behind Spurs’ high line.

Tottenham made the right decision signing Vicario in the summer, and the 27-year-old is now one of the best goalkeepers in the country.
