‘Incredible’… Pundit says Arsenal have an attacker who’s actually amazing defensively

Kai Havertz is an enigma of a footballer.

It’s fair to say that the German isn’t the most popular player in the world.

Havertz is a footballer whose game is very intricate, and while he can be effective at times, it’s sometimes very difficult to actually tell what he’s good at.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Karen Carney has been discussing Havertz and his performance at the weekend against Liverpool, and she says that while Havertz gets a lot of stick for his attacking output, his defensive work and his workrate off the ball is absolutely incedible and imperative to the way Arsenal play.

Havertz is a fantastic defender

Carney spoke about the attacker and his work off the ball.

“Like I said before, I think Mikel Arteta is a defensive coach. I think Kai Havertz gets a lot of criticism as an attacking player for his output, but he does an incredible role defensively for the team, cutting off that side of the pitch, I think he was brilliant as well out of possession,” Carney said.

Not enough

It’s all well and good working hard off the ball and helping the team, but when you’re playing in an attacking role, you need to be doing more than that.

Goals are, and always will be, the name of the game for attacking players, and, sadly, Havertz doesn’t seem to have that goalscoring knack that many of the best number nines have.

You can get away with just being a hard worker at a number of clubs, but when you’re gunning for a league title with a club like Arsenal, you need to be bringing more to the table that defensive workrate and smart movement.

End product is what is most important for any attacking player, and, unfortunately, Havertz has rarely provided that for Arsenal.
