‘Incredible’… Pundit reckons £27m Arsenal defender could actually play in midfield

Arsenal’s defence has been utterly incredible as of late.

The Gunners have just decided in recent weeks that they’re not going to concede goals anymore, and what’s more impressive is that they’re not even conceding many shots.

The north London club’s defensive line-up is very interesting. As of late they’ve been using four defenders across the backline who are all naturally centre-backs, and it’s been working to great effect.

Speaking on the Handbrake Off Podcast, Adrian Clarke has been discussing Arsenal’s defensive set-up, and he claims that while all of their defenders at the moment could be classified as centre-halves, he says that all four men, particularly William Saliba, could actually play in midfield.

William Saliba could play in midfield

Clarke spoke about Arsenal’s defence and the £27m man.

“We play four centre-halves, but we’ve signed four centre-halves who can play in the midfield. That is the genius of it, William Saliba and Gabriel are both incredible on the ball.” Clarke said.

“Saliba completed more passes than Sheffield United,” The host said.

“Exactly, they could all do a job in midfield, Ben White has done a job in midfield and Kiwior is looking more secure,” Clarke said.

Brilliant

Clarke is spot on, any of Arsenal’s four defenders could do a job in midfield.

Let’s face it, against Sheffield United, they were all playing in midfield anyway. After all, the Blades never got into the Gunners’ half.

They’re all fantastic in the ball, strong, fast and clever, what more could you want from a midfield player?

Of course, their defensive presence means they’re all best-served playing at the back, but if Mikel Arteta ever did want to try an experiement that involves playing any of these four players further up, he could easily do it.
