‘Incredible’… Gerard Pique says striker Man Utd signed for £26m was even better than Luis Suarez

Gerard Pique has been lucky enough to play with some of the best attacking players in world football over his career.

Pique was fortunate enough to call the likes of Neymar, Lionel Messi, David Villa and Pedro his teammates during his time at Barcelona.

However, according to Pique, one of the best centre-forwards he ever played with was someone he worked alongside at Manchester United.

Manchester United striker was better than Luis Suarez

Speaking to TalkSPORT on TikTok, Pique was asked to build a combined XI made up of his former United and Barcelona teammates.

Pique, interestingly, picked Wayne Rooney over Luis Suarez when building this team.

“Wayne Rooney or Luis Suarez?” Pique was asked.

“I would say Wazza, Rooney was at that time, in his prime, he was incredible,” Pique said.

Luis Suarez was incredible

We can’t help but disagree with Pique here.

Rooney is a legend in his own right, but Suarez was on another level in his prime.

Not only did Suarez’s best Premier League season outshine any single campaign Rooney put together, the Uruguayan also managed to win a European Golden Shoe in the era that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were dominating the goalscoring charts every single year.

Rooney was a fantastic player, don’t get us wrong, and his £26m move to Manchester United from Everton was transformative for the Red Devils, but Suarez genuinely has an argument to make for being the best striker of all-time considering what he did for Barcelona.

Pique was lucky enough to play with both men, and he reckons that Rooney just about edges this debate, but when you consider the two players in terms of longevity, goalscoring records and international impact, Suarez comes out ahead in our view.

Rooney and Suarez are two of modern football’s greats, that’s for sure.
