'Incredible': Alan Shearer blown away by £20m Aston Villa player
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has made Alan Shearer’s latest Premier League Team of the Week.
The 29-year-old has been outstanding for the Villans since joining from Arsenal for a reported £20million fee in 2020.
Martinez has made 52 appearances for Villa, keeping 19 clean sheets along the way.
On Sunday, the Argentina international helped Steven Gerrard’s side record an impressive 2-1 win over Leicester.
Villa fell behind as Harvey Barnes opened the scoring in the 14th minute.
However, Ezri Konsa scored a goal in each half to give the Villans all three points at Villa Park.
Martinez, meanwhile, worked hard to limit Leicester to just one goal.
He also produced a superb save to deny Barnes his second of the day by tipping his header over the bar.
Martinez and Konsa earned a spot in Shearer’s latest XI for their efforts against the Foxes.
Of Martinez, Shearer wrote on the Premier League website: “He made an incredible save to deny Harvey Barnes and preserve three points for Aston Villa.”
Of the latter, he wrote: “It’s not often a centre-back scores twice! He also dealt with a lot of Leicester pressure in an end-to-end encounter.”
Villa are looking superb under Gerrard, having won three of their last four and impressing in the defeat to Manchester City.
And with Martinez in their ranks, the Villans can certainly kick on and build on their great work so far under Gerrard.
