Inability to overcome Aberdeen has dogged Rangers’ season right from the off

Rangers’ most realistic chance of silverware disappeared last night with a tepid 2-0 home defeat against Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup at Ibrox.

The title race has just got away from Rangers as Celtic put the burners on at the turn of the year and it is perhaps more understandable that consistency has eluded a squad which underwent a huge overhaul during the summer and is adjusting to the demands of their hugely ambitious manager.

But the cup competitions represented a real opportunity to make waves but the Dons have now knocked Gerrard’s men out of both of them, following the 1-0 Betfred Cup semi-final defeat with last night’s result.

And Gerrard was bullish about his side’s merits compared to Aberdeen right at the beginning of the season. Back in August, after a 1-1 draw between the sides, the BBC quoted Gerrard saying his side are ‘a class above’ the Dons.

But since then, the Liverpool icon has been unable to prove that to be the case – overseeing just one victory over Aberdeen, unable to make up for them knocking the Gers out of both cups.

While overhauling Celtic over the course of a long season was always a big ask, putting themselves in a position where they can be relied upon to beat Aberdeen in a one off game should not be beyond Gerrard’s men by now.

A failure to do so has now dogged their entire season and it’s clear that it isn’t just Celtic Rangers should worry about next time around.
