Liverpool have a number of players who have to be considered as world-class right now.

No matter what your definition of that term is, it has to be said that the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah fit into that category.

Speaking on The World Class Stamp Podcast, Neville Southall has been discussing the current state of goalkeeping.

The Everton legend is less than impressed by the current standard of goalkeepers, it has to be said, but he says that by today’s standards, you probably do have to consider Alisson Becker and Manchester City’s Ederson to be world-class players.

Alisson is world-class

Southall shared his verdict on the £67m Liverpool man and the state of goalkeeping.

“Talking about world-class players, there are some really good goalkeepers, what do you think of Ederson and Alisson, would you say they’re world-class?” Southall was asked.

“In today’s world, probably, in the way goalkeepers are. The way they think, they all think differently now, they’re happy to get a touch on the ball and that’s it. Their thinking is wrong because they just want to do enough. If you’re world-class, just catch the shots, then they conceded a rebounded goal, but at least they saved it, brilliant,” Southall said.

Alisson is one of the best around

Regardless of what Southall thinks of the current state of goalkeeping, it has to be said that Alisson is one of the best around, and arguably one of the best to ever do it.

He’s the complete package, he’s an amazing distributor, a fantastic shot-stopper and there aren’t many players who are better than him when it comes to one vs one situations.

The Brazilian is the perfect example of what a modern goalkeeper should be, and he’s undoubtedly in that world-class bracket of player, even as a goalkeeper.
