'In this case, we know': Sky Sports journalist shares Luis Suarez update amid Aston Villa links

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has pulled off a coup in bringing former Liverpool teammate Philippe Coutinho to Villa Park.

Now, amid Luis Suarez’s reported desire to change clubs, Spanish football expert Alvaro Montero reckons Villa have a chance of landing the striker.

The Uruguay icon has been linked with a switch to Villa Park in recent days.

Journalist Gerard Moreno claimed on Tuesday that Suarez has rejected ‘multiple offers’ from Brazil and Saudi Arabia.

This is to concentrate on a potential Villa advance, he added.

“Not as important a role as he did last season”

And on Wednesday night, Montero spoke about Suarez’s chances of returning to the Premier League.

He believes Villa are certainly a possibility in terms of potential destination, given Gerrard’s friendship with the forward.

“It is a possibility because Luis Suarez does not have as important a role as he did last season when Atletico Madrid won La Liga,” he said on Sky Sports (19/1, 19:51).

“He has got other players, such as Antoine Griezmann, ahead of him.

“Diego Simeone does not seem to have the same confidence in him as last season.

“So I can understand why Luis Suarez is trying to find a way out.

“In this case, we know Steven Gerrard is a friend of his after playing in Liverpool and could be an option.”

Suarez, a cult hero at Liverpool and Barcelona, sensationally swapped the Camp Nou for Atletico Madrid in 2020.

This was after Ronald Koeman’s admission that Suarez would not be taken into account for the coming season.

Suarez proved Koeman wrong as he scored 21 Liga goals to deliver Los Colchoneros’ first league title since 2014.

However, the former Liverpool ace – who Jamie Carragher has previously deemed “unbelievable” – hasn’t had many 90-minute outings this term.

Suarez was on the bench again last night as Diego Simeone’s team crashed out of the Spanish Cup.

The striker’s current deal runs out this summer and it looks increasingly unlikely that they’ll offer him a new one.
