‘In that category’: Joe Gomez thinks one Liverpool player will be remembered as an all-time PL legend

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez believes Reds teammate Virgil van Dijk will be looked at as a Premier League all-time great.

The Dutchman has been so good for the Anfield outfit that he has made his £75million transfer fee seem like a bargain.

Van Dijk transformed the Liverpool defence when he joined in 2018.

Before he arrived at Anfield, the back line was fairly shaky, but afterwards, he helped turn it into a watertight unit.

Liverpool have won the Champions League, the Premier League and the Club World Cup thanks in part to Van Dijk’s efforts.

Last season, the 30-year-old suffered a long-term injury. Liverpool missed him terribly as they laboured to a top-four finish.

But this term, Van Dijk is back and shining once again, with the Reds still in contention for all four trophies.

On Friday, Gomez spoke to Premier League Uncut, where he had to name his perfect squad out of five players.

When it came to defence, the 24-year-old gave some honourable mentions, but opted for Van Dijk.

“Liverpool have had some great centre-halves, like Carragher, Hyypia, and so on,” he said.

“But for me, Virg is going to be looked at in the all-time Premier League greats, let alone Liverpool.

“I’ve said on record that Rio (Ferdinand) was an inspiration for me.

“Being from south-east, the career he had, the style of play.

“For sure he’s up there but I still think Virgil is capable of being in that category.”

Gomez picked two other Liverpool teammates in his selection – Alisson and Mo Salah.

Anfield icon Steven Gerrard also made the cut, as did former Arsenal and Chelsea full-back Ashley Cole.
