According to the Chronicle, new Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce is interested in bringing Andy Carroll back to St James’ Park. The 30-year-old striker is currently a free agent, having been released by West Ham United this summer.
Carroll began his career on Tyneside, and broke through into the first team in spectacular fashion about a decade ago. So impressive was the 6’4” forward as a youngster, that Liverpool paid around £35 million to prise him away from the Magpies in 2011.
However, Carroll failed to kick on at Anfield as injuries began to hamper his progress. A move to West Ham followed and the injury concerns continued. The nine-cap England man has managed less than 30 Premier League appearances in the last two seasons combined due to fitness issues.

That being said, when fully fit, Carroll remains a potent goal threat. His aerial prowess and physicality make him a nightmare for opposition defences. Despite his woeful injury record, Bruce appears willing to gamble on Carroll this summer.
The Magpies are certainly in need of a new goalscorer, following the departures of Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon. As a squad option, Carroll could be a shrewd and cost-effective addition. He certainly has an affinity for the club. However, Bruce would not be wise to put himself in a position where he is relying upon Carroll to be fit to start games regularly.
Following the emergence of the report linking Carroll with a return to the Toon, plenty of Newcastle fans took to Twitter to share their views on the matter.
