Arsenal made hard work of claiming three points against Aston Villa on Sunday, eventually running out 3-2 victors at the Emirates.
The visitors led the Gunners on two occasions but despite a red card for Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Arsenal collected maximum points.
Next up is a Carabao Cup contest against Championship hopefuls Nottingham Forest. The Reds will head south in good form having not lost since the opening day of the campaign.
With Manchester United to follow this weekend, it seems likely that boss Unai Emery will make several changes to his team to face the Reds.
One of those players who come into the side could be Rob Holding. The ex-Bolton defender has been sidelined for 10 months with a serious knee injury but is in the squad for this evening’s game.
Although Arsenal currently sit in fifth place in the league, they have been suspect defensively. The Gunners have shipped 10 goals in six matches which is the most of any team in the top half of the table.
Sokratis and David Luiz have been the main central defenders this season, although a strong performance from Holding tonight could give Emery some food for thought.
The 25,000-a-week (Spotrac) performer was just getting into his stride when injury struck last season. Holding was displaying the sort of form that fans had been waiting to see since signing from Bolton in 2016.
Given the severity of his injury, he will now need to prove himself all over again.
It perhaps works in his favour, however, that neither Luiz or Sokratis has stepped up and made themselves undroppable so far this season.
Holding is seen as a defender who can one day play for England. The challenge for him is to get fit, get back in the team and force Emery into picking him every week.
Performing against Nottingham Forest would certainly be a good starting point.
