'Imperious as ever': Garth Crooks raves about Liverpool star

Garth Crooks has named Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk in his Team of the Week for his performance in the 5-0 win over Watford.

The defender is back to his best after missing the majority of last season with a knee ligament problem.

Liverpool were no match for a hapless Watford. A Roberto Firmino hat-trick and goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah ensured a comprehensive rout.

Jurgen Klopp must be delighted with his team. After the disappointment of last season, his team look like title contenders once again.

One of the reasons for that is the return to form of Van Dijk. The uncompromising Dutchman has organised Liverpool from the back and the team is thriving.

Despite some superb attacking football at the weekend, Crooks had some praise for the Liverpool defender.

He named him in the BBC Sport Team of the Week and raved about his stunning performance at Vicarage Road.

The Final Score pundit said: “Make no mistake, this was a masterclass by Liverpool’s red arrows. Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane were not just back to their attacking best but had the sort of collaboration that won them the title.

“What’s more, Virgil van Dijk looks as imperious as ever. I must say Joel Matip looked impressive too alongside him.”

The Dutch international is without doubt Liverpool’s most important player. Last season, their title defence completely derailed following his injury.

He now looks back to full fitness and this was a tremendous showing from him at Watford.

It’s not just his defending that makes him so important. He organises everything from the back and although Jordan Henderson is the captain, Van Dijk is the real leader of men.

If the defensive destroyer stays fit then Liverpool will be firmly in the title mix come the end of the season.
