'Immaculate': Adam Lallana says Liverpool player's World Cup performance was absolutely 'incredible'

Adam Lallana has paid tribute to the cameo by Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold in England’s win over Wales.

With the game sewn up at 2-0, Gareth Southgate brought Alexander-Arnold on for his first minutes of the World Cup so far.

Lallana has written in the Times how impressed he was with the Liverpool defender, who he says would have had every right to feel downbeat.

There has been a constant discussion about Alexander-Arnold and England, and Kyle Walker came straight into the team ahead of him from the start against Wales.

Lallana on Alexander-Arnold

He said: “Alexander-Arnold is rightly lauded as one of the best full backs in the world, but he must have, justifiably, felt like he was fourth choice with England recently.

“Yet, his body language when he came on was incredible. There was no sign of sulking, that he didn’t want to be there or that he feels he is just making up the numbers.

“The way he defended, the way he presented himself and the way he intercepted was immaculate. He cushioned one ball out of the air which showed me he was on it.

“I thought that was a massive sign of how things are in the squad. Competition, and the opportunity out there, is driving standards up and up.”

The debate with Alexander-Arnold and England will rumble on and on, even when Walker and Kieran Trippier are out of the way.

Alexander-Arnold and Reece James look set to battle for the starting spot at right-back for England for the next decade or so.

There is an embarrassment of riches in that position for England and Gareth Southgate, who is looking to plot a route past Senegal tomorrow.
