'I'm told there is a very serious chance': Romano shares update about World Cup quarter-finalist Arsenal reportedly want
Arsenal have been heavily linked with PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo in recent months.
In October, The Athletic reported that the Gunners are among the clubs still chasing a deal for the 23-year-old.
However, Arsenal will likely have strong competition for Gakpo’s services in wake of the past few weeks.
The Netherlands ace has been one of the breakout stars of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Gakpo scored a goal in each of his nation’s group games.
Dennis Bergkamp, Wesley Sneijder and Johan Neeskens are the only other Dutch players to score in three consecutive World Cup matches.
Gakpo also impressed against the United States as the Netherlands ran out 3-1 winners.
As one of the World Cup’s breakout stars, he’ll likely have plenty of suitors for his services.
And according to Fabrizio Romano, they’ve all been handed a boost.
‘Keep an eye on the market’
The transfer insider, speaking on his YouTube channel, says PSV are winning to do business in January from £43million.
“I want to start of course with Cody Gakpo,” said Romano.
“He’s been incredible in the group stages with the Dutch national team, scoring three goals – one goal every single game.
“He was very good also in the game against USA.
“So Cody Gakpo is now showing on the best stage that he’s ready for a top move.
“Manchester United wanted him in the summer. They are still in talks with people close to the player, but it’s not only Man United.
“There are also other clubs in the race for Cody Gakpo.
“PSV’s original plan was to let him go in the summer and not in January.
“But now, after this World Cup, if a bid for more than 50 million euros will arrive, there is a chance for Gakpo to leave in January.
“And I’m told there is a very serious chance. So keep an eye on the market in the next days.”
Arsenal reportedly sought a new winger late on in the summer, but failed to get a signing over the line.
Now, with the Gunners challenging for the Premier League title, they have more pulling power when it comes to big players.
Gakpo will no doubt be on the radar of many top clubs – and Arsenal will surely fancy their chances.
