Ivan Toney has claimed that Patrick Bamford’s last season at Leeds United should be enough to keep himself as a Premier League striker.
Bamford in the goals
Toney was speaking to Stadium Astro, about his journey to the Premier League – ahead of Brentford’s opening game with Arsenal on Friday evening.
Toney’s journey to the top flight is comparable with Leeds striker Bamford’s, as both had to rise up through the lower leagues to reach the top.
Bamford actually went into last season with a number of doubters, but the Leeds striker ended up finishing among the top scorers in the division.
And Toney now predicts that Bamford will never have to go back to playing in the Football League, after showing so much quality.
“His journey has been similar to mine. I feel like it goes to show that someone else’s opinion doesn’t really matter,” Toney said.
“It’s what you think in your own head. Obviously people have said he’s not good enough, but if he deems himself good enough that’s all that matters.
As he’s shown he’s scored a respectable amount of goals. I feel like if you want something and you stick at it, it’s achievable.
“He’s played in the league so he knows what it’s like to be playing back there, and I’m sure he wouldn’t want to go back from playing in the Premier League.

“He’s kept himself a Premier League striker and I’m sure he will have a good career for the rest of his career.”
Toney to repeat the trick?
Bamford’s goalscoring feats last season mean that he is certain to go into this term as Leeds United’s main striker.
Marcelo Biesla has shown great faith in him throughout his time at Elland Road, even when some Whites fans were fairly critical of him.
Toney will be hoping to make a similarly big splash in the top flight, as he returns with Brentford.
Toney hit 33 goals in the Championship last term and should, therefore, go into the campaign with bags of confidence.
