‘I’m sure’, ‘even at that level’: Newcastle-linked 29-goal striker tipped for Premier League success

Reported Newcastle United target Alfredo Morelos has been tipped to be a success in the Premier League by Jonatan Johansson, the man who recommended the player to Glasgow Rangers three years ago.

Morelos is one of the Scottish Premiership’s standout talents, having weighed in with an impressive 77 goals and 29 assists for Rangers since his move to Ibrox from HJK Helsinki in 2017.

The Colombia international’s goals have helped Rangers climb back into the upper echelons of the Scottish Premiership table and mount title challenges in the past few years.

According to Goal.com, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are all interested in signing the 23-year-old sharpshooter in the summer transfer window.

Though Morelos’ future at Rangers is uncertain, Johansson has no qualms about whether he would do well in the English top flight.

“I’m sure Alfredo would score in the Premier League,” the Finn told the Daily Record. “Of course, it has to be the right fit, with the right manager and team around him.

“There are a lot of things that will determine how successful he’ll
be. And depending on the price, that will dictate which clubs are in the market for him. But the one thing I know is that if you give him the chance, he’ll be able to put them away – even at that level.”

While stressing that Morelos enjoys playing for Rangers and is “not in an unhappy place”, Johansson believes the sharpshooter would be open to a big move south of the border in the future, and the Ibrox side could well give him their blessing.

“Everyone wants to play at the top level and young players like him should be hungry,” he added. “You want them to move
forward and play in the best leagues. I’m sure Rangers would give him their blessing to do that.”

TBR View:

Morelos is a superb player whose goalscoring record is on a par with Celtic counterpart Odsonne Edouard, the two being the standout players in the Scottish Premiership and the most likely to move on to bigger things – 29 goals this season says it all really.

The Colombia international’s disciplinary record is something that needs to be worked on, but it’s nothing that cannot be ironed out through experience and top-notch man-management, something which a newly-wealthy Newcastle could surely provide via top coaches.
