'I'm sure': Brendan Rodgers makes claim about what Newcastle will do in January when asked about James Maddison

Brendan Rodgers has been asked directly about James Maddison amid extensive transfer links with Newcastle United.

As per the Daily Mail, Rodgers said he does not expect Leicester to let Maddison leave when the transfer window opens next month.

Leicester had a frustrating summer which had a knock-on effect on their start to the season but they are on the way up again now.

Rodgers is getting his side ready to face the Magpies on Boxing Day, and said he expects them to strengthen when the market reopens.

Rodgers on Newcastle and Maddison

He said: “I’ve been given no indication that we have to do anything with James in January. He’s someone I want to keep here.

“Newcastle have signed players who have improved the dynamic of the team.

“They’re trying to build something there, they’ll improve and get better.

“I’m sure they’ll strengthen their squad, and they’ll have the motivation to stay in the top four.”

The issue with Maddison is that he has looked an expensive deal to do, although at least Leicester’s improved form means that he should no longer be an essential part of a relegation fight.

His contract is running down, and that raises the prospect that something could be done in the summer unless he signs a new one.

Newcastle have to decide whether to potentially pursue an alternative next month if they can’t get Maddison or sit tight like they have done over the likes of Sven Botman since the takeover.
