'I'm pretty sure': BBC pundit thinks 'phenomenal' Newcastle player is getting frustrated at World Cup now

BBC Sport pundit Ashley Williams thinks Newcastle’s Callum Wilson will be frustrated not to come on for England last night.

Harry Kane toiled in the 0-0 draw with the United States, seemingly not completely free of the foot injury he picked up against Iran on Monday.

But the England captain played the whole game, despite Gareth Southgate having two substitutions spare and leaving Wilson on the bench.

Williams thinks Wilson may be wondering if he will ever come on for England in that scenario if he did not get introduced last night.

Williams on Wilson

Williams said: “I’m pretty sure Callum Wilson is sitting there tonight watching the game thinking: ‘when am I going to see any minutes of this World Cup?'”

Wilson did come on for Kane in the opening game of the tournament, when the England skipper had that injury and needed protecting.

So it is not like Southgate has taken him and not used him, and will keep Kane on the pitch in every single circumstance.

Wilson has already said elsewhere he knows his role and he knows how good Kane is and how established he is in this England team.

Southgate did take Kane off while chasing a goal in the 0-0 draw with Scotland in Euro 2020, which attracted attention to Kane’s form.

He would probably have been criticised if he took off the man who is closing in on being England’s record goalscorer in a game where England needed a goal.
