'I'm not happy': Tottenham star Eric Dier makes admission
Eric Dier has told Tottenham Hotspur’s official website that he is not happy to have not been involved in the England squad of late, but insisted that he is looking at the international break as a chance to improve.
Dier was a stalwart of the Three Lions’ squad for a number of years following his debut in 2015.
He made 15 appearances for his country in the year in which Gareth Southgate’s men reached the semi-final of the World Cup.
However, he only played seven times across 2019 and 2020. And he has not represented the Euro 2020 finalists once this year.
At 27, Dier should be coming into the peak years of his career. And it is clear that he still hopes to force his way back into the fold.
He suggested that he is trying to make the most of the chance to keep working. But he did admit that he was not pleased not to be involved.
“I’m not happy, put it that way!” he told Tottenham’s official website. “But for us to win before an international break is huge for the atmosphere, otherwise you have to wait for a long two weeks for redemption, so that’s nice.
“For me, it’s just a chance to work on things, things I want to get better at – it’s a great opportunity to do that. It’s also another hit of fitness work – that also helps.”
Eric Dier faces tough task trying to regain England spot – but there is reason for cautious optimism
It does appear that Dier has work to do to regain his place in the England squad.
Southgate has John Stones, Fikayo Tomori, Tyrone Mings and Conor Coady involved in his current ranks.
Meanwhile, Harry Maguire, Ben White and Ben Godfrey have all been involved in more recent squads than Dier.
The encouraging thing for the Spurs man is he has not made a bad start to the campaign.
He helped Tottenham keep three clean sheets in a row in the league at the start of the season. And it does appear that his partnership with Cristian Romero may be the one with the most potential for the time-being.
Spurs should certainly benefit if Dier is determined to get back into the England reckoning in the months ahead.
