Everton goalkeeping legend Tim Howard has surprised the football world with a major announcement.

The Toffees cult hero, who was at Goodison Park between 2007 and 2016, originally hung up his gloves and boots in October last year following an illustrious career.

However, Howard has now come out of retirement to play for Memphis 901 FC, the club of which he is part owner and sporting director.

Memphis currently play in the USL Championship, the second tier of professional association football in the United States below the MLS.

“I love to play and I love to compete, this gives me the opportunity to do both,” Howard is quoted by BBC Sport as saying.

“Since my retirement in October, my obsession for football has grown. The desire to win continues to drive me.”

Over his nine seasons at Everton, Howard made 413 club appearances, keeping 134 clean sheets and even scoring one goal, according to Transfermarkt.

Prior to his Goodison Park stint, the 40-year-old had played for North Jersey Imperials, MetroStars and Manchester United.

After leaving Everton, Howard had a stint at Colorado Rapids before announcing his retirement, having also won 121 caps for the United States in that time.

Needless to say, plenty of fans were pleased with Howard’s shock announcement and took to social media to have their say:
