Glasgow Rangers legend Ally McCoist has expressed his surprise with the Ibrox side’s reported plans to bring in new investment.
The Scottish Sun reported on 17 March that Rangers were closing in on a cash injection of £20million, with real estate tycoon and lifelong Bear Stuart Gibson believed to be the investor.
However, the report adds that he won’t be buying out Dave King, who will retain his holding in the club even though he is stepping down as chairman.

McCoist has welcomed the report, stressing that Rangers need investment if they are to catch up with Celtic financially, and he is surprised at the plans seemingly materialising so quickly.
“The club needs investment. There has been a level of funding already, of course there has, but to go to the next level they clearly need more investment,” McCoist is quoted by the Scottish Sun as saying.
“I don’t know very much about this guy to be honest with you. I’m a little bit surprised. I know Dave King has taken more of a back seat in recent times which is fine. Maybe it has been his long-term plan to come in and do his bit and then move on.
“I had heard last week about a potential investor and this seems to be the one. Listen, particularly at this time when no-one knows what’s happening day to day, investment can only be a good thing. Rangers are still well behind Celtic financially.
“They’ve been playing Champions League football for years and they’re in a good place. And that’s not even talking about how fruitful their business has been in the transfer market with the likes of Wanyama, Van Dijk and Tierney. It’s plain for everyone to see that Rangers are behind Celtic in that regard.
TBR View:
Given how a season that promised so much for Rangers has petered out to nothing, McCoist is absolutely right in welcoming further investment at Ibrox, which could help Steven Gerrard bolster his ranks further.
While the strongest Rangers XI has shown it can hold its own against Celtic, the squad has once again failed to last the distance, and as such, the prospect of bolstering both the ranks and the strength in depth is absolutely crucial for the Ibrox side’s hopes.
