'I'm a huge fan': Jamie Carragher lauds West Ham star after win
Jamie Carragher has told Monday Night Football (broadcast on 18/10; 22:45) that he is a huge fan of Declan Rice, and compared his performance for West Ham on Sunday to the kind synonymous with Roy Keane.
The Hammers produced a superb display to beat Everton at Goodison Park. Angelo Ogbonna scored the only goal late on.
However, West Ham were largely dominant throughout. And Rice seemed to run the show for the visitors on Merseyside.
He completed more passes than any other player on the pitch, according to Whoscored. No player was more successful when dribbling with the ball also.
It was a remarkable showing from the England international. And while reflecting on the game, Carragher suggested that he was the best player on the park by some distance – and made a very interesting comparison.
“The way I watched Declan Rice yesterday, it reminded me of a Roy Keane-type of performance,” he told Monday Night Football. “Running the game from midfield, having a presence, punching passes in the way Roy Keane used to, running forward at times with the ball and without the ball.
“And every time Everton attacked, he just seemed to be the guy who was there to stop it. It was a brilliant performance. I’m a huge fan of his. And as I said, he was head and shoulders above everyone.”
West Ham doing all they can to prove that Rice is better off staying right now
West Ham supporters have always anticipated that keeping Rice is likely to become an impossible task at some stage.
It has been apparent almost ever since he burst into the side that he is destined for the very top.
In fact, it is frightening to think that he is only 22 years of age. And yet, he is easily one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
But David Moyes’s men deserve credit because they are also proving a point. They are arguably showing to Rice that he does not need to think about leaving right now.
They are giving him the platform to be a Premier League talisman. And he is also getting the chance to play in Europe.
And it still feels as though there is more to come from the Irons. While they are still progressing, Rice should surely be happy to stay at the London Stadium.
