‘I’ll be shocked’… Paul Merson predicts who’ll win out of Tottenham and Wolves

Tottenham Hotspur are in Premier League action away at Wolves on Saturday as Ange Postecoglou looks to rally his troops following Monday night’s events.

Spurs fell to a 4-1 defeat to Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a match that cost the Lilywhites dear in terms of personnel.

Tottenham stars James Maddison and Micky van de Ven are both expected to be sidelined until the New Year after coming off in that game.

In addition, Spurs won’t have Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie available either, as both are suspended for the trip to Molineux.

Meanwhile, Wolves have no fresh injuries ahead of the game. However, Neto remains sidelined until after the international break along with Hugo Bueno. Joseph Lodge is a longer-term absentee.

‘Very interesting game’

Paul Merson, writing in his weekly Sportskeeda column, looked ahead to the match and predicted a 2-1 defeat for a depleted Tottenham side.

“This one is a very interesting game,” he wrote. “I’ll be shocked if Tottenham, with their injuries and suspensions, beat Wolves on Saturday.

“I was looking at Spurs’ situation and they have some bad injuries.

“Micky van de Ven is out and they’ve got Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie who are set to miss a couple of weeks due to suspension.

“James Maddison is going to be out too and Richarlison is set to undergo surgery.

“Ange Postecoglou will be fielding a makeshift backline and they are not going to be the same side that got off to a flying start to the season due to their injuries.”

This will be a real test for Postecoglou, as four of his regular starters this season will be unavailable.

If I was to have a go at guessing the replacements, I’d say we’ll see Eric Dier, Ben Davies, Emerson Royal and Giovani Lo Celso step in for Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie and Maddison.

It’s not like they’re bad players and, with Postecoglou having coached them, hopefully they’ll have what it takes to step in.

I reckon they’ll be able to do a job on the day and, with the rest of the team firing on all cylinders, I feel Spurs will have enough to get over the line. I’m guessing a 2-1 win to Tottenham.
