If reports are true, Edu is about to hold a hugely important meeting at Arsenal - opinion

Edu and Arsenal’s hierarchy are reportedly set for fresh contract talks with Bukayo Saka after his World Cup exploits.

90Min report that Saka’s representatives are due to sit down with Arsenal for further talks over renewing his current deal, which runs out in 2024.

They claim Manchester City are waiting in the wings and will get the green light to go for Saka if these talks do not lead to a successful conclusion.

If the report is true, that underlines the importance of the coming days for Arsenal in terms of their short and long term future.

Edu cannot let Saka go

There is no suggestion that the talks will not go well and the situation feels fairly calm at this stage even though talks have not reached a conclusion yet.

Perhaps Saka did not want to commit to a new deal before the World Cup as he thought that a strong tournament in Qatar could boost his value and earning potential even further.

No England player scored more goals than Saka in Qatar, and he was exceptional against France on Saturday night, so he may have been right on that score.

Saka is the poster boy for this young Arsenal team and him leaving for City – not that it is anywhere close to happening yet – would be symbolic.

The later years of the Arsene Wenger era were undermined by Arsenal selling their best players and that meant they could never build anything.

This time it feels different and the smart money would be on Saka signing, and it would be a huge boost if these talks ended with a new deal signed in the not too distant future.
