'If I'm honest': Jose Enrique names the key reason why Liverpool won't win PL this season
Jose Enrique spoke to The Mirror this week and he believes that Liverpool will not win the Premier League this season because of one key reason.
Jurgen Klopp’s men have started the campaign brilliantly. The Reds are unbeaten in all competitions and Mo Salah’s form makes us believe that the Egyptian could well win the league by himself.
However, Enrique isn’t quite sure. The ex-Reds defender feels that the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City have a better squad depth compared to Liverpool, which gives the two sides the edge in the race for the Premier League crown.
Jose Enrique: Why Liverpool will not win the Premier League
The Spaniard said when asked about the title favourites: “I really hope it’s Liverpool. But, if I’m honest with you, the problem with us is the lack of strength in the squad. In my opinion, I believe we’re missing players up front.
“Look, I know we have four players that can perform there – Firmino, Jota, Salah and Mane – but you cannot just rely on them the whole season. With Salah, he’s been fit until now, but if one of them gets injured, we’re going to very, very (much) struggle there. That’s the reality.
“In midfield, Gini (Wijnaldum) left and obviously we’ve been struggling a bit there. You could see Milner struggling at right-back a little bit as well. Even if he’s always the guy that performs everywhere on the pitch and it’s true, he didn’t have the best game.
“So, these kind of teams like Chelsea and (Manchester) City, they do have it (good squad depth). Obviously, that’s why, I believe the season is very long, we play Champions League and the two cups as well, it’s not going to be easy.
“I hope it’s Liverpool, but if I’m honest with you, I think because of the lack of strength, I would probably say Chelsea (will win the league).”
Can Liverpool win the league?
Liverpool are currently second in the Premier League table, just a point behind Chelsea. The Reds are the only team in the top-flight to have not lost a game yet, which shows just how strong they are.
Enrique certainly has a point with respect to squad strength. If they lose Salah up top and someone like Virgil van Dijk at the back, their season is arguably over.
However, if Klopp can keep his star players fit throughout the campaign, the Reds could well beat Manchester City and Chelsea to the Premier League title in May.
