A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on an interesting development from reported Spurs target Mario Gotze.

According to a report in the Daily Express from January, Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho had earmarked the Borussia Dortmund ace as a potential signing in the last transfer window.

The Germany international’s CV speaks for itself, having scored the winner in the 2014 World Cup final, as well as five Bundesliga titles, four German Cups and several Super Cups.

However, Gotze is currently struggling for game time at Dortmund, with a mere 13 Bundesliga appearances this season, just five of which have been starts.

The attacking midfielder, who rejoined Dortmund from Bayern Munich in 2016 for a reported £22million, has been limited to a bit-part role this season by head coach Lucien Favre amid fitness issues and lack of form.

Gotze has now confirmed to German newspaper Bild that he will leave Dortmund when his contract expires this summer, with a new agency set to represent him as he looks ahead to the next step in his career.

“After intensive considerations, I decided to make a change in the sporting planning of my career,” said the 27-year-old. “I deliberately took the necessary time for this step because it is an important step for me to set the course for the future.

“I am very much looking forward to working with Reza Fazeli and his agency International Soccer Management, whose professional competence has convinced me.”

A metabolic disorder, which is supposedly the reason for pelvis and upper-leg muscle injuries, has sadly hampered Gotze’s career, but he still remains an asset and a move to the Premier League could materialise this summer.

Here is what some Tottenham fans on social media have made of Gotze’s revelation amid reports that he was – and may well still be – on their club’s radar:
