Ibrahima Konate performance in World Cup opener divides French media

Liverpool star Ibrahima Konate produced an ‘imperious’ performance for France in their World Cup opener over Australia on Tuesday, according to Get French Football News, while RMC Sport only rated his display at 5/10.

The current champions have put one foot into the knockout stages already after beating the Socceroos. However, they had to recover from an early setback in their curtain-raiser.

Didier Deschamps’ men went a goal behind. And they were incredibly close to conceding another from distance. Fortunately for the French, their frightening ability in attack won the day and they ultimately won 4-1.

Konate divides opinion with his performance

It seemed to be a good night for Konate. The Liverpool star was handed a start ahead of William Saliba. And he seemed to do well alongside Dayot Upamecano.

The Guardian claimed that he shone. And they gave him an 8/10 rating. Meanwhile, the Daily Mail described his battle with Mitch Duke as ‘absorbing’.

However, some of the French outlets saw his display a little differently.

In fairness, Get French Football News suggested that Konate and Upamecano were imperious. But Foot Mercato claimed that he failed to stand out.

And RMC Sport only gave him a rating of 5/10. They suggested that he did not play with the serenity he is known for.

Konate can arguably feel hard done by should he lose his place for their clash with Denmark. But Deschamps may also be tempted to make changes.

Les Bleus also have Raphaël Varane, Jules Kounde and Saliba in the ranks. So rotating the side may make some sense at this stage of the competition.

Konate deserves great credit. Remarkably, he was only making his third appearance for his country. And ultimately, it proved to be a positive night for the French.
