Yesterday, Liverpool released Ibrahima Konaté’s first interview with the club following his £36m move from RB Leipzig.
The towering Frenchman spoke about how excited he is to play in front of the Anfield faithful, and also discussed his No.5 shirt.
While speaking about the latter topic, Konaté shared some thoughts on the shirt’s previous owner, Gini Wijnaldum.
What did he say?
Speaking to LFCTV, the 22-year-old said: “It’s an important number for this club, because a great player had this number before me. I hope I will do great things with this number.”
It goes without saying that the Dutchman was a great player for Liverpool.
Without him, the Reds wouldn’t have won the Champions League in 2019.

Wijnaldum also scored big goals in the Premier League, notably on the final day against Middlesbrough in 2017, to help the Reds achieve their goals.
After his Liverpool contract came to an end, the former Newcastle man has now joined Paris Saint-Germain.
Fair play Ibrahima Konaté
It’s pleasing to see Liverpool’s new No.5 pay tribute to Wijnaldum, and not simply gloss over what the Dutchman achieved at Anfield.

He didn’t have to do that, and nobody would’ve questioned him if he didn’t say a single word about Wijnaldum.
However, the fact he did just goes to show what type of character Liverpool have signed.
At 22, the sky is the limit for this thoughtful, intelligent prodigy.
