Ian Wright’s comments on Arsenal attacker Nicolas Pepe could still come true

Nicolas Pepe arrived at Arsenal in the summer with huge exception following his £72million (BBC) transfer from Lille, as he became the club’s record signing.

The 24-year-old is an explosive attacker with plenty of pace and can be a serious goal threat with his favoured left foot.

He is a £140,000-a-week star (Spotrac) that proved his class in Ligue 1 with Lille and was hoping to do the same at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League.

Gunners legend Ian Wright was extremely positive with his comments about the Ivory Coast International before the start of this season.

“This is exceptionally good business. This is unbelievable. This is the kind of player that once he settles in, personally, I think we’ve got a world-class player on our hands. And I’m not being over the top,” Wright said on his official Youtube account (1 August, 2019).

“He ticks so many boxes; goals, assists, but for me it’s the directness. We’ve missed that. We’ve missed a player that can take players on one-on-one.”

Wright predicted that Pepe could be a brilliant player for Arsenal and although that’s not quite been the case yet, there is a chance that it could still come true.

The right winger has played 32 games across all competitions so far for Arsenal, scoring six goals and supplying eight assists in return.

His goal return might not quite be at the level expected of a £72million player, but they are certainly encouraging and it must be recognised its his first year in a new country.

Pepe has shown enough quality in patches to show what he can bring to the North London club, with his raw pace and directness something that supporters adore.

There is certainly potential for him to keep improving moving on into next season and perhaps he can still live up to the hype from Wright.
