Arsenal legend Ian Wright has stated that Gunners striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang “deserves” to be part of a team challenging for the Premier League title and Champions League places.
The Gabon international is arguably Arsenal’s most important player, having scored 20 goals in all competitions this season and donned the captain’s armband on numerous occasions.
However, Aubameyang’s current contract at the Emirates Stadium expires at the end of the 2020-21 season and talks over a new deal are said to be continuing.

The Gunners face a huge battle to qualify for the Champions League, eight points separating them from fourth-placed Chelsea, and even a Europa League spot is far from certain.
As a result, there are doubts over whether Aubameyang would want to remain at Arsenal long-term in that case, or even whether they could afford a new contract without European competition money, as has been reported by the Daily Mail.
Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, is reportedly eager to either tie the 30-year-old down to a new deal or sell him in the summer instead of allowing his contract – and value – to run down.
“If you can imagine him in a better team then he himself would be winning Premier Leagues and vying for places in Champions League finals and I think he deserves that,” Wright told Premier League Productions, as quoted by Metro.
“We’re talking about the last big contract in his career. I just hope that the love that he has for the club and the fans have for him is enough for him but I wouldn’t want to be in his position because it’s a tough one for him.”
TBR View:
Aubameyang is definitely in a tough situation, as he loves Arsenal and the fans but is not only talented enough to be challenging for league titles and Champions Leagues, but as he turns 31 at the end of the season, he has, as Wright said, one “last big contract” in his career.
Most Arsenal fans wouldn’t begrudge him in the slightest were he to make the switch to a leading team which is more likely to offer him the top honours in club football.
Aubameyang’s place in Arsenal history, and in the hearts of the Gooners, is assured – if he left this summer, he would cement his legacy, provide the club with a decent sum to reinvest in the team, and hopefully win the silverware which befits his quality.
