Ian Wright thinks Arsenal star looks ‘bereft of confidence’ under Mikel Arteta

Ian Wright has told the Kelly and Wright Show on Optus Sport that he thinks Arsenal summer signing Willian is looking “bereft of confidence” as he continues to struggle since his move to the north London club from Chelsea.

Willian, 32, joined Arsenal in the summer and after having had a hand in 20 goals for the Blues last season, many Gunners fans were hopeful that he could shine in the same way in red and white. Fast forward a few months, and it has not been the case.

Clocking up 11 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal, Willian is yet to score and while he has laid on three assists – he has hardly lived up to his enormous £190,000-a-week wages (Spotrac). He is struggling to recapture his Chelsea form.

Arsenal legend Wright was previewing Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur, and he reckons Willian is completely lacking in any confidence under Mikel Arteta – stating that he is missing the “attacking thrust” required.

“If it’s going to be Willian [to start], he seems so bereft of confidence,” Wright said. “Everything is sideways. There is no offensive thrust from him at the moment. We need that more than anything else, someone to do something a little bit different.”

TBR’s view – Should Willian start? Or is it time for Nelson?

Reiss Nelson impressed on the right flank during Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Rapid Vienna on Thursday night. He laid on a lovely assist for Eddie Nketiah’s goal, before being replaced by Willian after 63 minutes.

He has impressed when given the chance in Europe and did well against Wolves last time out. So, should Nelson be used against Tottenham? The one thing Arteta must consider is that Willian turns up on the bigger occasion.

He did so throughout his time at Chelsea. So, Willian should be given a chance – but if he struggles, Nelson should come on.
