Ian Wright sympathises with Tottenham concerns over fatigue ahead of Ajax clash

Tottenham Hotspur host Ajax tonight in the first leg of their first ever Champions League semi-final clash.

It’s a huge night for the club and Chris Sutton and Ian Wright were part of the lineup on BBC’s Monday Night Club last night (29/04) previewing the match.

Sutton was trying to argue that it would be a better story if Ajax went on to lift the trophy than if Tottenham did, but perhaps surprisingly, former Arsenal hero Wright sided with Tottenham in the debate.

He said (at 15:30 here): “We’re not talking about a Manchester City or a Liverpool. There’s Arsenal fans – my Twitter’s burning up now with Arsenal fans probably caning me – but we’re not talking about a team who have done it the same way the so-called top teams have done it.”

“Pochettino doesn’t want an advantage over Ajax [in terms of fitness], he just wants a fair fight. Spurs are going in without Harry Kane – their top man – Son, their second top man, and Dele Alli limped out of the West Ham game. They’re going in patched up.”

There was more in the debate where Wright put his club loyalties to one side – as every good pundit needs to do – and praised Tottenham for the work they’ve done.

Sutton’s comments failed to take into account the riches in the Premier League – our domestic clubs tend to be asked to pay a premium because selling clubs are aware of the TV money sloshing around.

Spurs winning the Champions League would be every bit as an incredible story as Ajax returning to the pinnacle of European football; given the lack of spending in the summer and in January and the injuries they’ve had.
