Ian Wright says one Arsenal player is going to really grow in confidence after Sunday’s win

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has waxed lyrical about Willian, saying he’s repaid the faith shown in him by Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.

Willian has struggled for much of his time at the Emirates Stadium since him move last summer.

He impressed in Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Fulham but most of his displays since then were average at best and poor at worst.

However, Willian has looked much better in recent weeks, and played a big part in helping the Gunners to victory over Leicester on Sunday.

The Brazilian assisted the first and the third goals and was key in the build-up to the second.

And Wright was delighted with how Willian did, suggesting the winger is going to grow in confidence rather than trying to play safe.

“There was a lot of negativity about the team, Willian and (Nicolas) Pepe playing,” he told Wrighty’s House.

“But I like that Mikel has faith in what he’s trying to do.

“I was delighted for Willian. The faith that Mikel has had in him, he’s repaying that faith.

“Mikel’s come under fire, Willian’s come under fire but we can’t forget that he’s a quality player. But for some reason it’s not quite happened.

“That David Luiz goal – that ball had to be put on a sixpence (by Willian).

“That kind of thing will give him more and more confidence because before he was playing it safe, playing it side to side.”

TBR View:

Willian has had his fair share of detractors this season but credit to him for putting in a much-improved performance and looking much better overall in the past few weeks.

Likewise, Arteta deserves credit for sticking to his guns, working with Willian and giving him the chance to show what he can do.
