Ian Wright has told Optus Sport’s Kelly and Wright Show that he would be “dreaming” if Arsenal managed to secure a deal to sign Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma – amid reports the Gunners want to sign the African ball player.

Bissouma, 24, has starred since arriving at Brighton in the summer of 2018 for a figure of £15million (WeAreBrighton) – clocking up 89 appearances for the Seagulls and slowly building his reputation as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders.

A holding midfielder, Bissouma is renowned for his intricate array of passing as well as his work rate at the base of the Brighton midfield. Though he is rarely seen in attack, he has still managed to net four goals for the Seagulls from long range.

The Express have claimed that Arsenal have opened lines of enquiry to sign the African ace, and Wright spoke about how Bissouma might be the ideal partner for Thomas Partey – but that he would be “dreaming” over a potential move for him.

“You need someone next to Partey of real calibre,” Wright told his own show on Optus Sport. “People keep mentioning Bissouma, if only. Someone like Bissouma, but Arsenal have to be in European competition.

“We need that player next to him, we want to play out the back – get it to Partey, and have that solidity of Partey and – I know I’m dreaming, but Bissouma – to get the people to a player like Odegaard, if he stays. A massive if.”

TBR’s view – Bissouma would be a stunning signing, but at what cost?

Alongside the more attacking Partey, Arsenal need a ball-playing midfielder that offers a better protective screen than Granit Xhaka. The Swiss ace is decent but not mobile enough, and probably lacks in the pace that Bissouma can.

But what price is fair for the midfielder? Signed for £15million, Arsenal would certainly have to pay more than double to get his signature. Anything under £40million would be good business for the Gunners, especially if they sell the likes of Xhaka.
