Ian Wright has told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club that Arsenal need to sign a defender to replace the loss of Calum Chambers this month, if the opportunity arises.
Chambers was ruled out last month a knee injury that is expected to keep him sidelined until the end of the season. Meanwhile, critics have continues to hammer David Luiz and Sokratis for their below-par performances. Rob Holding is close to a return.
Shkodran Mustafi was not even mentioned by Wright, with the Gunners being strongly linked with Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng, Bournemouth star Nathan Ake and RB Leipzig wonderkid Dayot Upamecano.
Asked by host Mark Chapman if he felt Arsenal needed to sign players or Mikel Arteta should work with what he has got, Wright stated that if he is given the chance to sign a defender – the new Spanish boss has got to take it.
“Yeah, wait until the summer,” Wright said. “But if a defender comes up, we lost Chambers which is a shame. Holding is coming back. But with Sokratis and Luiz, it looks okay with the pressing. But if they can get a defender, then of course, it will help.”
TBR’s view – Should Arteta spend over the odds now, or wait?
If Arsenal have any aspiration of finishing in the top six, let alone the top four, then they need to seriously improve their defender. That can either be on the transfer market, or on the training ground.
As Wright says, if the opportunity presents itself, then they should take it. If they can get Upamecano, Ake or Boateng for a bargain price – the latter is likely to be around on the cheap – then they have to move.
