Ian Wright has told Match of the Day 2 that he thought that Eric Dier was brilliant during Tottenham Hotspur’s hard-fought win over West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho’s men briefly went top of the Premier League after Harry Kane’s late goal gave them a victory at the Hawthorns.

But they did come under pressure at times. And they were thankful for some superb defending from the likes of Dier and Toby Alderweireld.

Dier, in particular, seemed to produce one of his most impressive performances of the season for the visitors. His performance was lauded by a number of supporters on social media.

And Wright clearly felt that he deserves all of the plaudits coming his way. The pundit was particularly impressed with the clearance the England international made off the goalline during the first-half.

“With the travelling back from Bulgaria, and everything they had to do, they had to dig in because I thought that West Brom played well. His defensive awareness today was brilliant and what they needed. They needed to dig in,” he told Match of the Day 2.

“You see him checking for where the forward is, got himself back, brilliant clearance. People will say he should be in those positions. Yeah, but it’s different when you’re in the game and making sure that you’re managing everything in front of you.

“He was just in the right place at the right time today, every single time. West Brom, like Slaven said, they were a team that created chances, they could have done better, but I think he was one of the main reasons they didn’t.”

TBR View: Dier the latest to step up under Mourinho’s guidance

It has not always been the easiest time for Dier. His previous versatility possibly counted against him as he initially struggled to cement his place in one particular position in the side.

But Mourinho has stuck by him as a centre-back. And he has vindicated that faith with some really impressive displays in recent times.

A number of players appear to be stepping up again under Mourinho. And Dier is certainly one of those who looks to be getting back to his best once again.
