Ian Wright reacts to Dele Alli display as Spurs beat Wolves
Ian Wright has told Match of the Day 2 that Dele Alli was brilliant on Sunday as Spurs beat Wolves 1-0 at Molineux.
Nuno Espirito Santo got one over on his former team upon his return at the weekend. It was Dele who scored the decisive goal thanks to an early penalty.
The 25-year-old won the spot-kick himself after being brought down by Jose Sa in the opening 10 minutes.
His all-round game however, deserves huge praise. Dele made significant contributions at both ends of the pitch, showing as much desire to burst into the box as he did to try and block any attempt on goal in his vicinity.
His performance comes after a promising pre-season for the England international.
And Wright suggested that the best of Dele is on show once again after his struggles working under Jose Mourinho in North London.
“Dele seemed to be in the wilderness, something happened to him under Mourinho. And we know what Dele is capable of. I think we saw a lot of it in the game today,” he told Match of the Day 2. “I thought he was fantastic in the way he plays. He gets himself forward. I just liked the way he looks like he’s back to it now.
“It was brilliant, it was a brilliant performance from him,” he went on to add.
Huge for Nuno if he is the Spurs boss to get the best out of Dele Alli after Wolves display
Dele only turned 25 earlier this year. So he should only just be entering the peak years of his career.
Obviously, he still has plenty to prove. Mourinho was not the only manager to not get the best out of him in the last few years. His form also stuttered under Mauricio Pochettino.
But it could be a game-changer if Nuno is able to get the best out of him.
It is easy to forget that Dele scored 28 goals in the Premier League across his first two campaigns with Spurs.
He has already bettered his tally from last season. And if his display on Sunday is a sign of what is to come, perhaps he may end up enjoying a campaign where he is threatening to reach double figures once again.
