Ian Wright has told Optus Sport’s The Kelly And Wright Show that Liverpool talent Curtis Jones it the perfect fit for Jurgen Klopp’s midfield – and compared the Reds academy product’s development to that of Manchester City’s Phil Foden.

Jones, 19, was in sensational form for Liverpool after a late win over Tottenham Hotspur. The England Under-21 star caught the eye of many with his performance, showing some excellent skill, an array of passing and a brilliant engine.

The versatile midfielder now has 28 senior appearances to his name with Thiago injured, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita coming back from injury – it seems Jones has made himself first choice in the Reds midfield.

Wright spoke highly of Jones, applauding him for his performance before comparing Liverpool’s usage of Jones to that of Foden at Manchester City – suggesting that the Reds ace has overtaken Foden, who continues to prove somewhat inconsistent.

“I really like Curtis Jones,” Wright said. “They’ve slowly introduced him over a couple of years and he looks like he fits there. We’re still waiting for Phil Foden to impose himself on the City team, but Jones has solidified his place.”

TBR’s view – Has Jones overtaken Foden?

Towards the end of last season, you would have said Foden was above Jones. Certainly, Foden has earned an England cap and already has 90 senior outings to his name for Manchester City – in which he has had a hand in 34 games.

He has done that all by the age of just 20. Jones has just 28 games, but if we compare the two players right now – Jones is certainly in a better position and has much more of a chance of being first choice than Foden does.

Jones is the perfect fit for Liverpool. Foden fits in at City, too – but finds the likes of Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne ahead of him in the pecking order. Jones has certainly begun to surpass Foden.
