Ian Wright raves about Arsenal star Nicolas Pepe after win over Brighton

Arsenal great Ian Wright has heaped praise on Nicolas Pepe for his performance during yesterday’s 2-0 win over Brighton at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners finished the campaign with five straight victories in the Premier League and Wright discussed Pepe on last night’s Match of the Day.

The £72 million signing from Lille has started to showcase his undoubted talent during the 2020/21 campaign.

He has finished with 16 goals and five assists from 47 appearances in all competitions.

Pepe scored five goals in the last three games of the campaign, including a brace in yesterday’s clash.

Wright has suggested that the Ivorian should have been starting games earlier in the season.

He told Match of the Day: “I’d have liked to have seen the faith shown in him earlier on this season. He persisted with Willian and we saw how that worked out.

“He’s somebody that we know what he is capable of; he’s got a lot of skill and his first goal is a fantastic goal. His touch and finish are brilliant, it’s beautiful.

“Showing faith in Willian hasn’t worked out and what needs to happen now is a big summer for Arsenal.”

TBR View: Pepe must be handed more chances next season

The £100,000-a-week player has taken some time to adapt to first-team football but he’s worked himself into the ground this season.

Credit where it’s due, but Pepe has provided Arsenal with something different during the second half of the campaign – and Arteta must be delighted.

Despite his good end of season form, he was handed just 16 starts in the Premier League and he deserves more.

Pepe has stood up to be counted during the last few months. As a result, he should be handed a proper chance to establish himself on the Arsenal flank next season.
