Ian Wright makes ‘major’ Myles Lewis-Skelly claim after Arsenal beat Leicester City

After Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Leicester City in the Premier League, it was Mikel Merino and Ethan Nwaneri who stole the headlines.

Nwaneri was Arsenal’s Player of the Match and deservedly so, but the award could have easily been handed to Merino, too.

Merino was highlighted as an Arsenal striker solution in wake of Kai Havertz’s injury, and the Spaniard demonstrated all of his credentials off of the bench at the King Power Stadium.

In his 20 minute or so cameo, Merino linked the play, was a threat in the air and also finished his chance at the back post superbly.

Of course, Nwaneri was also integral to those efforts, who has done a remarkable job of replacing Bukayo Saka thus far.

However, Arsenal perhaps wouldn’t have been in a position to win the game were it not for fellow youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Ian Wright thanks Myles Lewis-Skelly for saving Arsenal against Leicester

Speaking on Premier League Productions after Saturday’s win, Arsenal legend Ian Wright was quick to point out Lewis-Skelly’s ‘unbelievable’ contribution at the back in the second half.

Arsenal were exposed by a poor Thomas Partey pass, and when Leicester forward Bobby Decordova-Reid was on hand to tap the ball in at the far post to put the hosts 1-0 up, Lewis-Skelly had other ideas.

Recalling the moment, Wright said: “Unbelievable. Massive, you know, Thomas Partey I don’t know – his pass was really so flippant there.

“But you see, he [Lewis-Skelly] kind of gets his foot stuck and then he gets another little touch but it’s the luck, it’s the luck you need at this stage.

“Look you get your foot stuck and then he digs it out, bam, he’s [Decordova-Reid] getting ready to tap that in so that is major us in winning this game. Major.”

Mikel Merino comes in clutch for Mikel Arteta

It was a game of fine margins, but fortunately for Mikel Arteta his side were able to grab all three points.

Ruud van Nistelrooy refused to call Arsenal lucky after the game, even if he did seem to think that his side were worth a draw at least.

As mentioned, Leicester could have gone ahead were it not for Lewis-Skelly’s superb intervention.

But Arsenal have maintained pace with Liverpool, and an attacking trio of Leandro Trossard, Merino and Nwaneri might still have legs in the title-race.
