Ian Wright has told Match of the Day (broadcast on 2/11; 22:43) that he is confident that Aston Villa will be fine this season after their performance against Liverpool, as he named four players that he was impressed by in the defeat.
The Villans came within a handful of minutes of ending Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season. Anwar El Ghazi had given the home side the lead at Villa Park. But the Reds produced a stunning turnaround in the final moments.
Andrew Robertson equalised three minutes short of the 90, and Sadio Mane bagged the winner in stoppage-time to break Villa hearts.
It will be a tough defeat for Dean Smith and his side to stomach. But Wright insisted that he saw enough positive signs to believe that the newly-promoted side will not be making a swift return to the Championship.
“Villa were brilliant today,” he told Match of the Day. “And like the manager said, they’re very disappointed because it was a lack of concentration.
“When you look at someone like Nakamba, very impressed with Nakamba today, Trezeguet’s best game for Villa for me today. And then you’ve Mings and Engels at the back. I think Villa are going to be fine, they were really good today.”
It is almost surprising that Villa find themselves so close to the bottom three right now. They have been ahead against Tottenham, Arsenal, and now Liverpool. And while they came away from those games empty-handed, they have shown that they have the potential to produce some massive performances.
It will frustrate Smith that they could not hold on at the weekend when the win was so close. But it is not difficult to see why Wright is extremely optimistic about their prospects for this season.
