Ian Wright told Match of the Day on BBC One (broadcast on 14/9 from 22:45) that he was particularly impressed with three players during Tottenham Hotspur’s win over Crystal Palace – while he also joked that Harry Kane will be devastated after the win.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men picked up their second victory of the campaign as they thrashed the Eagles 4-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
All of the damage was done during the first-half. Son Heung-min bagged a brace inside the first 25 minutes, while Patrick van Aanholt put Serge Aurier’s cross past his own goalkeeper.
It was Erik Lamela who completed the scoring shortly before the break as Spurs comfortably collected the three points. It was also their first clean sheet of the season.
And after the game, Wright lauded three of the players, while he joked about how Kane will feel after failing to get on the scoresheet in a 4-0 victory.
“It’s the intensity that they played with today. Son and Aurier, who had a really good game, Winks, who I thought was really good as well today. They caused them all sorts of problems,” he told Match of the Day.
“Devastated,” he joked when asked how Kane will feel about not scoring.
Tottenham’s statement of intent
It was an important statement made by Tottenham heading into next week. It was not the easiest run of games before the international break, but they will be pleased to get their first victory since the opening day.
Spurs now open their Champions League group-stage campaign in the coming days. A trip to Olympiakos may not be easy, nor will the game against Leicester City just a few days later.
But they will take a lot of confidence from the manner of their victory over Palace. Heading back from the break, they would have known that they had a real chance to take five wins from five before they travel to Bayern Munich next month.
There is, obviously, still some way to go. But they have one victory under their belt. And based on their performance against the Eagles, it will be the first of many in the coming weeks.
