Ian Wright lauds Emi Martinez after Aston Villa draw with West Brom
Ian Wright has told Match of the Day 2 that he was impressed by Emi Martinez once again as Aston Villa drew with West Brom on Sunday, insisting that the goalkeeper has been brilliant since his arrival at Villa Park.
Dean Smith’s side have now only won two of their last 11 league games. And it did appear that they were heading for a third straight defeat as the Baggies boasted a 2-1 lead heading into stoppage-time.
However, Keinan Davis bagged a dramatic equaliser for Villa with his first ever Premier League goal. But Martinez can certainly take a lot of credit for giving the Villans the chance to get back into the game.
The 28-year-old made a number of outstanding saves to deny the Baggies, particularly during the second-half. And Wright suggested that he was the standout performer for Villa in the draw.
“Martinez, another impressive day for him,” he told Match of the Day 2. “He’s gone there to be a number one. He’s brilliant, he’s doing very well for them.
“He went there to actually make sure he could cement his number one place for Argentina, but he made some very good saves.”
Villa certainly seem to have improved in all areas this season. And yet, it is almost frightening to think of how many points Martinez has won Smith’s side since arriving from Arsenal.
Only Ederson and Edouard Mendy have kept more clean sheets than Martinez (via FB Ref).
It is certainly going to be incredibly difficult to see Villa finding a way to spend £17 million in a better way during any future transfer window.
