Ian Wright hammers Tottenham star Harry Kane’s brother and agent, laughs off ‘gentleman’s agreement’

Ian Wright has told Optus Sport’s The Kelly and Wrighty Show that a gentleman’s agreement is “laughable” – when discussing Harry Kane and his Tottenham future. Kane continues to be strongly linked with a move to Manchester City. Wright also criticised the agent and brother of Kane.

A report from Fabrizio Romano claims that Manchester City are willing to raise their initial offer of £100million – to £127million. But only if Spurs soften on their stance regarding Kane’s future. It is widely believed that Daniel Levy will only accept offers of around £150million for Kane.

Jack Grealish joined Manchester City, after a £100million release clause was inserted into his contract. But with Kane, a release clause was not placed into the six-year deal in June 2018. Instead, it is said a gentleman’s agreement was made between Kane and Levy. But Wright rubbished that.

“I read the other day, Kane mentioned his brother [Charlie] is involved because he trusts him – totally understand that,” Wright told his own programme on Optus Sport. “But if a clause is in there, Harry Kane is at Manchester City. They’ve messed up.

“For them not to have, the calibre of player he is, a clause in that contract before the 2018 World Cup – for that length of time – Tottenham have every right to do what they’re doing and ask for what they want. A gentleman agreement is laughable.”

Kane to City: Brother deserves criticism, release clause was needed in Tottenham deal

Of course, hindsight is a wonderful thing. Back in the summer of 2018, Tottenham looked like they were going forward and of course – they reached the Champions League final a season later. So, perhaps they felt at the time a release clause was not needed.

But there is a reason why the Mino Raiola, the Jorge Mendes, the super agents of the world exist. Because they make the right decisions. Not inserting a deal was a huge mistake because it gives Tottenham and Daniel Levy the room to charge what they want. Six years, too.
