Arsenal delivered a proper Premier League title contender’s performance on Saturday as they battled to a 2-1 win over Brentford.

The Gunners dominated proceedings at the Emirates Stadium and took the lead in the first half, but were then pegged back due to a goalkeeping error.

Arsenal set about trying to find the goal to put them in front again, but this proved a laborious task. And at the other end, the Bees had some great opportunities.

However, the Gunners finally managed to break down Brentford’s resistance with just four minutes of normal time remaining.

Shortly after full time, BBC Sport pundit Gary Lineker took to X to share footage of fellow pundit – and Arsenal legend – Ian Wright celebrating Kai Havertz’s winner.

Arsenal break down Brentford resistance late on to go top

Arsenal opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Ben White stood a cross up into the box and Declan Rice got above Mads Roerslev to head past Mark Flekken into the far post.

However, just before half time, Aaron Ramsdale hesitated on a clearance and, when he eventually went for the kick, Yoane Wissa slid in to block the ball and send it into the back of the net.

Half-time saw Arsenal’s players and staff rally round in support of Ramsdale, who was much improved in the second half. He made superb saves from Ivan Toney and Nathan Collins.

Then, in the 86th minute of the match, Havertz – a player who so many had seemingly written off in the first half of the season – popped up with another dramatic ‘Reiss Nelson’ moment.

White, who provided the assist for Rice’s opener, was on hand to deliver another superb cross into the box for Havertz to nod home, with Flekken unable to stop the trajectory.

The result saw Arsenal go top of the table. Now, let’s see what the other two title contenders – Liverpool and Manchester City – can do when they lock horns on Sunday.
