Ian Wright has told Optus Sport’s Kelly and Wrighty Show that he believes Erling Haaland will want to move to Manchester City this summer having played against them twice in two weeks – and joked what he told Phil Foden after the full-time whistle.
Haaland, 20, has been in sensational form once again this season – scoring 33 goals in 35 games. His 49 goals in 53 Dortmund appearances have seen him linked with a move to Manchester City, not least because his Father played for the club.
City need a striker with Sergio Aguero confirming that he will leave the club, leaving just Gabriel Jesus as the only option up top. They need cover, and Haaland is clearly the most-obvious target – while Harry Kane has also been linked with a move.
Speaking about Haaland’s future following City knocking Dortmund out of the competition, Wright believes Haaland will be desperate to join Pep Guardiola’s side for numerous reasons – and joked what he told Foden, after the two had a conversation.
“He will have been impressed by the way City dealt with a Dortmund side that started brilliantly,” Wright said. “De Bruyne has now signed, Foden is there, Sterling is negotiating a new contract, Pep is there for another few years.
“All of those things, there aren’t many negatives about City right now – and he has got to watch them twice. If he’s like me – selfish and greedy – you want to play in that team. On speaking to Foden, Wright joked Haaland said: “Tell them I said yes.”
TBR’s view – Wright is bang on, Haaland will be very tempted
Despite knocking Dortmund out, City will have benefitted in their pursuit of Haaland – as Wright says, because he got to watch them play at their exhilarating best. City were in unstoppable form, Foden netting a stunning winner in the second half.
Haaland will have seen the likes of De Bruyne, Sterling, Foden, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez creating chance after chance. He will have been licking his lips at the amount of chances he will have to score in a City shirt. Certainly, he will be tempted.
